Judging books by their covers – and other uncomfortable truths about costume design | Sunday

In 40 fast-paced minutes, professional costume designers Gabriele Stazi and Francesca Trani of Perseus Design Studio will take you on a tour through the strange, brilliant and occasionally questionable world of costume design. What makes a costume feel believable, memorable and right for the character – and what makes it look like someone just opened a wardrobe and hoped for the best?

Using a selection of glorious hits, questionable choices and outright costume disasters from film and entertainment, we’ll break down what works, what doesn’t, and why. In this journey, we’ll get into silhouette, materials, colour, layering, weathering, functionality and visual storytelling, with real professional techniques, behind-the-scenes stories and the occasional “how did this make it past approval?”

Join us for the ride, have a laugh, and maybe learn a thing or two about what makes a great costume actually work.
